Gal Oya is one of Sri Lanka’s least-visited wilderness areas. You take a boat safari across Senanayake Samudraya — the island’s largest reservoir — where, with luck, you may see elephants swimming between islands. You also walk the forest with a guide from the indigenous Vedda community and visit their cultural centre. It’s a genuinely rare experience that very few itineraries include.
Fairly active. It includes the Horton Plains trek, a ~10.8 km stage of the Pekoe Trail, the Ella Rock hike, and the Little Adam’s Peak and Sigiriya climbs. A reasonable level of fitness will let you enjoy it fully, and any individual hike can be made optional.
The train from Nanu Oya to Ella is included, but first-class seats are very limited and sell out fast. We book as early as possible, though availability can’t be guaranteed.
